You’re Married! Here’s How To Shop For Your New Household

When you are a newlywed, you will usually be moving into a new home where your and your partner. This is where you will build a life together. Since you are just about to share a single roof over your heads, you’ll need to consider exactly how to outfit that home.

Shopping for Your New Household

Here are some tips that will help you shop for and outfit your new home:

  • Prioritize

The priorities of every newlywed is different. If you’re moving into an apartment and already have many of the items you’ll need, make a list of what’s missing and shop for those items first. If you’re starting from scratch, you’ll need a comprehensive rundown of everything that a new house or apartment should have, and prioritize those items so you get the key ones before picking up luxuries that look really cool, but aren’t essential.

  • Determine Your Financial Status

In shopping for a new household, your financial situation will be a key factor. You should know how much you can afford at the moment, and make sure you’ve budgeted for the essentials before moving further down the list. A refrigerator or vacuum might not be a sexy purchase, but it’s a lot more important when you’re starting out, than having a motorized chair or a projector HDTV system. Also, don’t be tempted by top-of-the-line appliances or furniture if you’re not going to be able to afford all of the household necessities. You might have to start out by sleeping on a futon in order to afford a dining room table or a set of pots and pans.

Be realistic and sensible. There’s plenty of time in life to get fancy and upscale; your first chore as a newlywed is making sure that you can life comfortably day to day, before you get some of the accessories or cool appliances you’ve always wanted. Once you’re established, it will be even more fun to shop for some of the “goodies” when you have the money to really afford them.
